Chandigarh, October 2, 2026: Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), ending his around four-and-a-half-year tenure as the state Congress chief.
After meeting senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi, Warring confirmed his resignation and said that nobody had forced him to step down.
Speaking to reporters, Warring said he had personally submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi. “Nobody asked me to resign. I myself went and submitted my resignation to Rahul Gandhi,” he said.
Warring said he had discussed his experience as Punjab Congress president over the past four-and-a-half years during his meeting with Gandhi, besides sharing his views on the political situation in Punjab, the challenges ahead and ways to strengthen the party organisation.
He also said he would continue to remain committed to the Congress and would work with whoever takes over as the new Punjab Congress president.
“Reaching the top is a big achievement, but nobody remains at the top forever. Everyone has to become a former (X) one day,” Warring said.
Warring also responded to BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu’s remarks accusing the Congress of following a “use-and-throw” policy. He said he was not concerned about what other leaders were saying and preferred to put his views directly before Rahul Gandhi.
Warring’s resignation comes amid months of internal differences within the Punjab Congress and discussions over a change in the state party leadership ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Reports said the party high command had decided to replace Warring following consultations conducted by Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot.
Warring had taken charge as Punjab Congress president in 2022. His departure follows a period of factional differences involving several senior state leaders. The Congress is now expected to announce his successor as part of an organisational reshuffle in the Punjab unit.
