Punjab releases over Rs 3,243 crore under Social Security schemes, benefiting 36.39 lakh people

Chandigarh, October 10, 2026: The Punjab government has released more than ₹3,243 crore under various social security schemes during the current financial year, benefiting 36.39 lakh people, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said on Saturday.
Of the total amount, ₹841.76 crore has been disbursed to 9.45 lakh widows, destitute women and dependent children, while ₹2,401.67 crore has been released to 26.94 lakh senior citizens and persons with disabilities, the minister said.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government was committed to providing timely financial assistance to vulnerable sections of society and ensuring that eligible beneficiaries could live with dignity and security.
She said the state government had made a budgetary provision of ₹6,131.91 crore for various social security schemes for the financial year 2026-27 to ensure the continued delivery of welfare benefits.
Emphasising the need to reach every eligible beneficiary, the minister directed officials to intensify awareness campaigns, speed up the processing of applications and strengthen monitoring at the field level.
She instructed officers to ensure that no eligible person was deprived of assistance under any social security scheme.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the government aimed to ensure that financial assistance reached beneficiaries without unnecessary delays and that funds allocated for social welfare translated into meaningful support for those in need.
The schemes cover some of the state’s most vulnerable groups, including widows, destitute women, dependent children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
