SKUAST-Jammu organizes one-day workship-cum-awareness program on “Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in day to day Agriculture”

Jammu, November 13, 2024: Agrometeorology Section, SKUAST-J under the aegis of Prof. B. N. Tripathi, Vice Chancellor and guidance of Prof. S. K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu organized one day workshop cum awareness program on “Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in day to day Agriculture” funded by JKST&IC, DST, UT of J&K at village Sadwal of Panchayat Chak Dulma under block Rajpuraof Samba district on 13th November 2024.
The main objective of this programme was to aware the farmers about the measures to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change and to improve their socio-economic status by planting fruit plants to raise their income. In this program, about 180 farmers (male and female) participated.The programme was preceded by Dr. Veena Sharma, Technical officer, Agromet Section, coordinator of the program, by welcome note.
She discussed the impact of climate change in the region and its impact on soil, water and crops.
She stressed upon the use of agromet products, weather forecast-based agro-advisories, and Meghdoot mobile apps in day to day agriculture operation and to adopt the climate resilient technologies developed by SKUAST-Jammu to get higher agriculture production with low input cost in conjunction to conserve the natural resources.
Dr. Devinder Manyal, MLA Ramgarh and Chief Guest of the function highlighted the importance of such type of programmes and inspired farmers to adopt the new technology developed by SKUAST-J, Chatha, Jammu.
He also stressed upon taking benefit from the weather forecast services which will ultimately enhance the income of poor and marginal farmers of the area. He also briefed various schemes offered by of state agriculture & horticulture department for the welfare of farmers.
He ensured farmers to conduct such programmes for farmers in future too. He also distributed the fruit plants among the farmers of the area. .
Dr. Mahender Singh, Chief Scientist and Incharge Agromet, gave detailed information on importance of timely agricultural operations based on the weather forecast and adverse impact of climate change on agricultural crops. He briefed development of human resource through specifically providing adequate agricultural education to the farmers.
He stressed upon the adoption of various adaptation and mitigation options to overcome the adverse effect of climate change on crops.
Dr Reena Sinha, Professor Entomology discussed an alteration in geographical distribution and abundance of plant insect pests under warmer temperatures and changing precipitation. She explained the effect of various insect pest on crop under climate change and their biological management.
Dr Bhav sinha, Professor, Division of Plant Physiology discussed Impact of climate change on regular bearing of mango and their management. He highlighted use of growth retardant (patlodutrazole) can able to manage the alternate bearing problem of mango.
He also discussed the technology developed by SKUAST-Jammu for alternate bearing of mango to uplift the production and quality of mango every year.Radhakrishan ex BDC Rajpura stressed upon the farmers to participate in such programmes to get acquainted with new technology developed in field of agriculture.
Dr Karamjeet Singh, and Tehsildaar Rajpura was also present on the occasion. Sh. Radhakrishan ex BDC Rajpura, Sh. Saileder Saini. SO, Rajpura, Pankaj Sharma, JE Rural Rajpura, ex Naib sarpanch Sh Purshotam Kumar were among the others who attended the program. The programme was concluded by vote of thanks given by Vinay Sharma, Panchayat Chak Dulma.
