Sultanpur Lodhi (Kapurthala), April 17, 2025 — Panic struck early Thursday morning in village Dadwindi, Sultanpur Lodhi constituency, when a battery-powered scooter parked inside a home suddenly exploded, triggering a fire that engulfed multiple vehicles.
The incident, captured on CCTV, has reignited concerns about the safety of electric vehicles, especially in regions experiencing rising summer temperatures.According to initial reports, the family residing in the house was asleep at the time of the explosion.
They were jolted awake by a loud blast and discovered two scooters in flames, with the fire quickly spreading to an Alto car parked nearby. Alert neighbors rushed in to help, and the blaze was eventually brought under control.
Major Vehicle Damage, No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no one was injured. However, both scooters and the car were severely damaged, with one of the scooters completely destroyed. Jaswinder Singh, the owner of the scooter, shared that it was purchased two years ago and primarily used by his children.
“It’s a big relief that no one was near the scooter when it exploded,” he said. “Otherwise, this could have turned into a major tragedy.”
Previous Complaints Raised Against EV Model
Jaswinder also revealed that he once held an agency for the same model of battery-powered scooter but gave it up due to frequent complaints and safety concerns.
“These vehicles are being promoted aggressively by the government and companies, but in reality, they are proving to be more hazardous than traditional petrol and diesel vehicles,” he added.
Safety of Battery-Powered Vehicles Under Scrutiny
This incident has raised fresh questions regarding the safety of electric two-wheelers, especially during hot weather conditions.
Experts are calling for stricter quality control, better battery management systems, and public awareness campaigns on safe charging and storage practices. As the use of electric vehicles increases across India, this case serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks if safety protocols are not rigorously followed.
Authorities are yet to release an official report on the cause of the explosion, but preliminary findings point toward a battery malfunction or thermal runaway — a known hazard in lithium-ion battery packs when exposed to high heat or damage.
