Jalandhar, July 31, 2025 —
Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh announced on Thursday a comprehensive plan to establish a four-layer backup system across all government hospitals in the state. The system aims to guarantee uninterrupted oxygen and power supply, along with reliable firefighting, water, and sanitation services, thereby bolstering critical care infrastructure and ensuring patient safety.
During his visit to Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Civil Hospital in Jalandhar, Dr. Singh met with health officials and issued key directives for systematic improvements. Addressing the media, he reiterated the Punjab Government’s resolve to deliver high-quality healthcare, emphasizing that no patient’s life should be jeopardized due to infrastructure or system failures.
Commenting on the recent tragic deaths of three patients at Jalandhar Civil Hospital, the Minister confirmed that a thorough inquiry has been launched to investigate the causes and identify any lapses. “There is zero tolerance for mistakes in Intensive Care Units,” he asserted, promising strict action against those found responsible. “The investigation will be exhaustive and transparent.”
Dr. Singh also highlighted positive strides in hospital staffing, revealing that house surgeons now receive a monthly salary exceeding Rs. 70,000—more than double the previous stipend. This increment has significantly boosted recruitment and strengthened medical teams at government healthcare facilities.
The Minister sharply criticized opposition MLAs for politicizing the tragedy, questioning their failure to ensure functional oxygen plants and emergency hotlines during their long tenure. “Instead of blaming the current government, they should reflect on their own shortcomings in developing healthcare infrastructure,” he stated.
During the visit, Dr. Singh personally inspected the hospital’s oxygen plant and power backup units. Extending condolences to the families affected by the recent losses, he assured full government support and reiterated the commitment to prevent such incidents from recurring. “We stand firmly with the bereaved families in this difficult time and will ensure patient safety remains paramount,” he concluded.
