Attention Travelers to Shimla! Kalka-Shimla track to remain closed for 15 days – Here’s Why
By Mehak Arora
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), May 27, 205: If you're planning a summer getaway to Shimla by train, here's an important update you shouldn't miss. Northern Railway has announced the suspension of all train services on the Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge track for 15 days in June due to urgent bridge repair work.
Why the Suspension?
The decision comes as part of a critical infrastructure upgrade. A bridge on the track, located in the Summerhill area of Shimla, was severely damaged by heavy rains in August 2023.
Though temporary repairs were carried out to keep trains running, a complete overhaul is now necessary to ensure long-term safety and reliability.
When Will the Closure Begin?
The repair work is scheduled to start shortly after the first week of June and is expected to take approximately 15 days. During this period, no trains will operate on the Kalka-Shimla route.
The Kalka-Shimla railway line holds UNESCO World Heritage status, and the restoration will adhere strictly to heritage guidelines. UNESCO has recommended preserving the original design of the bridge to maintain the historic and cultural value of the iconic hill railway.
If you’re planning to visit Shimla in June, consider these steps:
- Check Train Status: Stay updated via the official Indian Railways website or contact your nearest railway station.
- Explore Alternate Routes: Consider road travel or other train services to nearby stations.
- Booked Already?: Look into refund or rescheduling options for your tickets.
- Plan Ahead: Keep buffer days in your itinerary and stay flexible.
