Another Jail Breach: 10 Mobiles Recovered, 6 Inmates Booked
510 mobiles recovered in 2024 – 338 during current year as on date
Ferozepur, August 6, 2025: In yet another breach of prison security, ten more mobile phones were recovered from the premises of Ferozepur Central Jail, marking the second such incident this month. Earlier, on August 2, fifteen mobile phones were seized during a surprise search.
Out of the ten phones recovered this time, six were found in the possession of under-trial inmates, while four were discovered unclaimed within the jail campus, suspected to have been thrown in from outside after use.
Six inmates have been booked under the Prisons Act in connection with the recovery. They have been identified as Pre Singh, Nirvair Singh, Boby alias Gulli, Mintu, Bhim Kumar, and Angrez Singh. The case also names some unidentified persons who are believed to be involved in smuggling the phones into the jail. Sharma Singh has been assigned as the Investigating Officer.
The recovery adds to an alarming trend. During the current year alone, 338 mobile phones have been seized from inside the jail along with several banned substances and items, smuggled in using various tactics, particularly during visitation hours. Last year, 510 mobile phones were recovered, indicating a continued and serious lapse in jail security protocols.
Authorities have noted that mobile phones remain the most sought-after contraband among inmates. These devices are used not just to stay in touch with family but also for making extortion and threatening calls, perpetrating criminal activities from behind bars.
There is a need for stricter scrutiny of parole policies, especially for inmates previously found in possession of banned items, to curb the inflow of contraband and maintain prison discipline.
