Chandigarh University students represent Punjab at Rajpath; fascinate audience with folk dance at Republic Day Parade 2022
CU’s Giddha-Bhangra team performs in first ever Vande Bharatam Dance Performance at Republic Day

Mohali, February 1, 2022: Students of Chandigarh University created history, as they represented the state of Punjab, enthralling the audience at the 73rd Republic Day parade at Rajpath, New Delhi with their soulful performance of traditional dance forms- Bhangra and Giddha, on Wednesday last.
For the first time in history, 36 teams of dancers, one from each state and union territory, were selected through a nationwide competition to perform during the Republic Day parade 2022.
The Girls Giddha Team and Boys Bhangra Team of Chandigarh University, Gharuan got the honor of representing the State of Punjab on Rajpath, in this maiden show of national integration through multiple dance forms.
The 20-member strong Giddha-Bhangra team of the University enthralled the audience with their soulful performances of Bhangra and Giddha, folk dances of Punjab.
The dancers left the audience spellbound with their moves, dancing to live music and presenting a magical representation of Punjab’s rich art, culture and heritage, much to the applaud of the huge gathering including the Hon'ble President and Prime Minister of India.
It may be mentioned that for the first time, the Union Ministry of Culture organised a nationwide Vande Bharatam dance competition. The Giddha-Bhangra team of the Chandigarh University defeated 205 teams from the state to make it to the Grand Finale where it competed with 72 other teams at National level, and made it to the final list of 36 teams, who got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to display their talent at the Republic Day Parade 2022.
The Gidda team of Chandigarh University included Harpreet Kaur (Travel and Tourism Department), Prabhanoor Kaur (Law), Panvi (Interior Design), Namrata (Commerce), Mehak Kaur (BA Psychology), Simranjit Kaur (Yoga), Dakshita (CSE), Puneet Kaur (Films and Television), Aarushi (BJSC) and Pallavi (BSC Physics). Similarly, the Bhangra team included Rahul Singh (Mechanical Engineering), Gautam (BBA), Arshpreet Singh (MBA)and Sarabjit Singh (MBA), Vishal Bhatia (BSE Interior Design), Gurjiv Singh (Nutrition), Ramandeep, Shahzad Singh (Law), Shubhneet Singh (Mechanical Engineering), and Gurjit Singh (B.P.Ed.).
Congratulating the Giddha-Bhangra team of the University, Dr. NT Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Chandigarh University said that it is a matter of pride for us to represent the State on such a big stage.
He said that the cultural performances presented by the team of the University have gained an appreciation not only in the University and the State but also in the entire country, adding that even before this, the Bhangra team of Chandigarh University has won the world title by showcasing its talent in various competitions organized in the country and abroad.
