DC inspects Sutlej embankments, confirms no breach; Flood prep in full swing
Ferozepur, August 6, 2025: Amid rising water levels in the Sutlej River due to heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, Deputy Commissioner Deepashikha Sharma conducted an extensive inspection of flood-prone villages, including Guddar Dhani, Harike Headworks, Ruknewala, and Gatta Badshah in Ferozepur district. The visit aimed to assess the condition of river embankments and ensure the safety of nearby populations.
Addressing recent viral reports about an alleged breach near Basti Ram Lal Teriya in Jamshedpur village, the DC clarified that no embankment had broken. She said the water overflowed onto a common passage due to the release of approximately 20,000 cusecs from Harike Headworks, but the main embankment remains completely intact and secure.
DC informed that immediate field verification was carried out by the local SDM and officials, and with the help of about 3,000 sandbags and community support, the damaged pathway has been fully restored.
The DC also emphasised that regular inspections of embankments are being carried out across the district. Where necessary, embankments are being reinforced with soil bags, stones, and machinery to prevent any potential breaches. Irrigation, Drainage, and Revenue Department officials have been put on high alert, with round-the-clock monitoring teams deployed.
To further bolster preparedness, additional field teams have been stationed to promptly respond to any signs of rising water or overflow. Flood control rooms have already been set up at both the district and sub-divisional levels, along with identified emergency shelters.
During her village visits, DC interacted with residents, listened to their concerns, and instructed officials to immediately strengthen vulnerable embankment points using bags and machines. She appealed to the public not to panic and to promptly report any unusual water flow or threat to the authorities.
The DC added that as part of monsoon preparedness for 2025, planning meetings had already been conducted with all departments. Necessary resources, including boats, life jackets, flood lights, and searchlights, have been arranged. Officials from various departments accompanied her during the inspection.
DC concluded by reaffirming that the situation is currently under control, but all departments remain vigilant in case of any escalation in water levels in the Sutlej or Beas rivers.
