Gurdwara attack not acceptable; punish the culprits without mercy: Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan

Ludhiana (Punjab), August 22, 2026: National youth leader and Advocate Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan strongly condemned the shocking attack at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton, Canada, in which two people were injured during morning prayers.
He said that an attack inside a Gurdwara is not merely an assault on individuals but a deeply disturbing attack on the dignity, peace and sanctity of a place of worship.
Grewal said that he strongly appreciates the immediate condemnation by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his clear message that no person should ever feel unsafe while praying or visiting a place of worship.
He said that such a principled stand must now be followed by firm, visible and uncompromising action against anyone responsible for violence, intimidation or hate targeting the Sikh community.
He said that the incident is absolutely unacceptable and cannot be brushed aside as an ordinary disturbance.
A Gurdwara is a sacred place where people come with faith, humility and a peaceful heart. Grewal said that those who create fear inside a Gurdwara or target innocent worshippers must face the full force of Canadian law, regardless of their identity, background or motive.
Grewal told that the safety of Sikh worshippers in Canada must be treated as a serious security and community-protection issue. If threatening calls or intimidation against Sikh places of worship are also being reported, authorities must investigate every such complaint thoroughly, identify the perpetrators and ensure that the Sikh community does not live under a climate of fear.
He said that the Canadian authorities must complete a transparent investigation, establish the motive, examine every possible hate-related angle and prosecute those found responsible to the fullest extent of law. There must be no selective justice, no excuses and no hesitation when the safety of worshippers is threatened.
Grewal further said that the Sikh community has contributed enormously to the social, economic and cultural development of Canada and deserves complete security, dignity and respect. No Sikh, no senior citizen, no family and no worshipper should have to look over their shoulder while entering a Gurdwara to pray.
He said that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s statement sends an important message, but words must be converted into action. He urged the Canadian government and law-enforcement agencies to strengthen security around vulnerable Gurdwaras, take threats seriously, protect worshippers and ensure that perpetrators of violence cannot escape accountability.
Grewal said, “Enough is enough. A Gurdwara is a sanctuary of faith, peace and humanity, not a place where anyone should face violence or fear. Those who attack worshippers must understand that the law will find them, expose them and punish them. The Sikh community deserves safety, justice and dignity, and there must be zero tolerance for violence in any place of worship.”
He expressed solidarity with the injured persons, their families and the wider Sikh community in Edmonton and prayed for their speedy recovery. He also appreciated the Edmonton Police Service for its swift response and urged the authorities to ensure that the investigation reaches its logical conclusion without fear, favour or political pressure.
Grewal said that the protection of places of worship and the right of every individual to practise their faith without fear are fundamental principles of any democratic society, and any attack on that right must be answered with the strongest possible legal and institutional response.
