Punjab Human Rights Body reconstituted; Justice Ranjit Singh appointed Chairman

Chandigarh, May 17, 2025: In a significant step toward revitalizing the human rights movement in Punjab, a gathering of over two dozen human rights activists from across the state convened at Sri Guru Granth Sahib Bhawan, Chandigarh, and unanimously decided to reorganize the Punjab Human Rights Organization (PHRO) under the leadership of Justice Ranjit Singh.
The organization was originally founded by the late Justice Ajit Singh Bains, a pioneer of the human rights movement in Punjab.
Expressing deep concern over the rising incidents of human rights violations in Punjab and across the country, the participants held serious deliberations and approved the organization’s new declaration and structural framework.The meeting emphasized the need for a united and structured approach to address the pressing human rights challenges.
Newly Elected Leadership
In the restructured body, Justice Ranjit Singh has been elected as Chairman, with the following office bearers:
- Dr. Piara Lal Garg – Vice Chairman
- Malvinder Singh Mali – General Secretary
- Advocate Rajvinder Singh Bains – Head of Legal Wing
- Sarabjit Singh Verka – Head of Research Wing
- Hamir Singh – Organizing Secretary
- Dr. Khushal Singh – Office Secretary
Justice Ranjit Singh has been authorized to appoint additional office bearers and assign specific responsibilities. The organization’s head office will be located at Sri Guru Granth Sahib Bhawan, Chandigarh.
Commitment to Expanding the Network
The meeting also resolved to form district-level committees and elect provincial officebearers to strengthen the organizational network across Punjab.
Prominent Participants
Among the prominent figures who joined the reorganization effort were Giani Kewal Singh, Advocate Gurjit Singh, Jathedar Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, Rajwinder Singh Rahi, Gurpreet Singh (Global Sikh Council), Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu, Advocate Gurdeep Singh (Chandigarh), Advocate Navjot Kaur Chabba, Paramsunil Kaur, Armanjot Kaur, Amanpreet Kaur Rai, Gurshamshir Singh (Journalist), Advocate Daljit Singh Bath, Tejinder Singh (Mohali), Inderpreet Singh Goga Sandhu, Advocate Parminder Singh Gill, Prof. Sham Singh, K.P. Singh, Satnam Singh, and Advocate Parminder Singh, among others.
The reconstitution marks a renewed commitment to upholding justice, transparency, and accountability in the region through legal and civic action.
