There are total eight Sarpanch candidates, who are contesting these polls from Bar Majra colony panchayat having nearly 5500 votes.
Interestingly, seven out of eight candidates including women are non-Punjabi and are migrants hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The only Punjabi candidate is Gurnam Singh who has been allotted with tractor symbol.
As per the villagers, more than 50 percent voters are migrants only, who settled here to get jobs in Tricity.
Also, there is no Punjabi language on any posters displayed in various parts of the colony. All the posters are in Hindi. Even, the Punjabi candidate Gurnam Singh was also forced to design his poster in Hindi.
Talking to Babushahi, Gurnam Singh said that the majority of voters are unable to read/write Punjabi due to which he also chose Hindi for everyone's convenience. Similarly, the Balongi panchayat, which also falls in Mohali, has a lot of migrant population and most posters are designed in Hindi only.
