Chandigarh's water management: Key decisions take in first meeting of water supply and sewerage disposal committee

Chandigarh, February 28, 2025 – In a significant step toward improving water supply and sewerage management, the first meeting of the newly constituted Water Supply & Sewerage Disposal Committee of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) was held under the leadership of Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla.
The Mayor entrusted Sarbjit Kaur, Chairperson of the Committee, with the responsibility of ensuring efficient water distribution and sewerage disposal across the city.
Key Agendas Discussed: Sewerage Cess and Temporary Water Connections
The committee deliberated on two crucial issues:
- Proposed Increase in Sewerage Cess:
- Sarbjit Kaur suggested a 2% annual increase in sewerage cess to maintain and upgrade infrastructure.
- However, Councillor Smt. Prem Lata raised concerns over the financial impact on residents.
- Approval of 2,563 Temporary Water Connections:
- The committee approved the provision of temporary water connections for residents of Lal Dora and Phirni areas in 22 erstwhile villages of Chandigarh.
- This move is expected to generate ₹3 crore annually for the MCC.
- The connections will be subject to conditions, including no ownership rights and automatic disconnection in case of demolition orders from the Chandigarh Administration or courts.
Mayor’s Commitment to Strengthening Water Infrastructure
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla emphasized the importance of efficient water management and sanitation, stating, "Providing clean water and a robust sewerage system is a priority. With Smt. Sarbjit Kaur leading this committee, I am confident we will make substantial progress in improving Chandigarh’s civic amenities."
Sarbjit Kaur, in her address, assured residents that the committee will work diligently to enhance water supply, streamline sewerage disposal, and improve sanitation across the city.
