Chandigarh, May 23, 2025 — The Government of Punjab has issued an official clarification refuting claims by the State of Haryana regarding the supply of water from the Bhakra Main Line (BML) Canal.
In a press release on Friday, Punjab termed Haryana's assertion—that it is receiving its full share of 10,300 cusecs—as "misleading and deceptive."
Current Status of Water Supply
According to Punjab's official statement, as of 12:00 noon on May 23, the BML Canal, which has a total capacity of 11,700 cusecs, is not yet running at full capacity at its entry point in Punjab. The flow is currently being increased in a phased manner.
The data provided indicates that:
- At present, the BML Canal is receiving 9,690 cusecs of water at its starting point in Punjab.
- Of this, Punjab is drawing 2,025 cusecs for its use.
- After accounting for the water allocated to Delhi and Rajasthan, Haryana is currently receiving approximately 6,720 cusecs—well below the 10,300 cusecs it claims.
Punjab Asserts Right to Full Allocation
The Punjab Government has reiterated its entitlement to draw its full share of 3,000 cusecs from the canal, by existing agreements. It emphasized that Haryana will receive water based on the remaining canal capacity after Punjab's share is met.
Call for Responsible Communication
In its statement, Punjab criticized Haryana for allegedly engaging in “cheap publicity tactics” and urged the neighboring state to present factual information to the public rather than creating confusion.
The issue of inter-state water distribution continues to be a contentious matter in the region, with both states maintaining firm positions.Punjab's latest clarification underscores the need for accurate communication and adherence to established water-sharing protocols.
