Senior IRS officer arrested with middleman for accepting Rs 25 lakh bribe

New Delhi, June 1, 2025 — In a major crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Amit Kumar Singhal along with a private individual for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹25 lakh.
The bribe was reportedly part of a ₹45 lakh demand in exchange for “assistance” from the Income Tax Department.The complaint was filed by an individual named Harsh Kotak, prompting the CBI to register a case on May 31, 2025.
Singhal, a 2007-batch IRS officer, was serving as Additional Director General at the Directorate of Taxpayer Services in New Delhi at the time of his arrest.
According to the CBI, the officer had allegedly threatened the complainant with legal action and hefty penalties if the bribe was not paid.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught the private individual red-handed while accepting ₹25 lakh at a government official’s residence in Mohali.Following this, Amit Kumar Singhal was also taken into custody from his residence in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
Both the government officer and the private individual are now in CBI custody and will be presented before a court. In connection with the case, the agency conducted searches at multiple locations including Delhi, Punjab, and Mumbai.
The CBI has confirmed that further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the bribery network.
