Mohali (Punjab), August 1, 2025: In a move that has stirred widespread debate and raised eyebrows among human rights observers, the gram panchayat of Manakpur Sharif village in Mohali district has passed a resolution denying shelter and village facilities to couples who marry without family or community consent.
According to the resolution, passed unanimously in the presence of villagers, any boy or girl who elopes or enters into a court marriage without parental approval will no longer be allowed to reside in the village. Furthermore, the panchayat has appealed to neighboring villages to adopt similar stances, warning that such couples should not be given refuge in surrounding areas either.
The sarpanch of the village, Dalbir Singh, said the resolution is a "preventive measure" aimed at preserving village harmony and upholding family values.
“When children betray their families' trust, the entire village feels let down. This is not a punishment, but a warning for the future,” he stated. He further emphasized that the move is intended to protect traditional cultural norms and prevent further incidents of unauthorized court marriages.
The resolution also states that anyone found helping such couples or offering them shelter will face strict action from the panchayat.
The village administration has urged the district authorities to support their stand and take action in case of violations. As of now, the couple that reportedly triggered the resolution has left the village.
However, district officials have taken a more measured approach. Sonam Chaudhary, ADC (Rural) of Mohali, responded to the situation saying, “No formal complaint has been received so far. If the individuals involved are adults, they have the legal right to make their own decisions. If any complaint arises, we will act strictly in accordance with the law.”
