Punjabis Must Have More Children to Preserve Future Generations: Speaker Sandhwan’s Remark

Chandigarh, November 17, 2025 — Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has sparked discussion with his latest remarks urging Punjabi families to have more children.
Sandhwan said that the trend of having only one child is becoming increasingly common, but this, according to him, is not in the long-term interest of Punjabis. “Children are the real support in old age. That is why Punjabis should consider having two or three children,” he stated.
He expressed concern that thousands of young people leave Punjab for foreign countries every year, resulting in a steady decline in the state’s population. Calling the issue “serious,” Sandhwan said Punjabis must rethink the “one-child mindset” and opt for two or three children in order to preserve future generations.
Sandhwan made these remarks during an event organised by the Jaikara Movement Social Organisation at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Satsang Sabha, Kotkapura. The ceremony honoured families that have remained drug-free for three generations — from grandparents to grandchildren.
