Amritsar (Punjab), January 9, 2026: A shocking incident of violence and robbery has gripped Amritsar today after a local jeweller was brutally attacked and robbed in broad daylight near New Flower School. The assault, which was captured in a now-viral video, was reportedly a targeted hit following the victim's refusal to pay protection money (extortion) to local gangsters.
The victim, identified as Mukhtiar Singh, a resident of Antaryami Colony and owner of a jewellery showroom on Sultanwind Road, was heading to deliver gold to a customer on his motorcycle around 10:30 AM.
According to eyewitnesses and video footage, a group of 8 to 10 assailants arriving in a black car intentionally rammed into his bike, causing him to fall.
Once grounded, the attackers, armed with sharp-edged weapons including swords and knives, chased and assaulted Mukhtiar Singh.
The victim's relative, Sahib Singh, stated that the family had been receiving extortion calls and threats for several days, but the situation escalated into this violent confrontation when the demands were not met.
After the brutal assault, the attackers fled the scene with over 400 grams of gold, estimated to be worth approximately ₹60 lakh. Mukhtiar Singh was rushed to a local hospital by family members and residents, where his condition is currently reported as stable.
The incident has sparked significant public outrage, with residents questioning the effectiveness of the local police as such high-profile crimes continue to occur in busy public areas.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Vishaljit Singh confirmed that the police are examining CCTV footage to identify the culprits and have launched a comprehensive investigation into the extortion module behind the attack.
