Breaking: Court declares SAD leader Jaskaranjit Singh Deol’s arrest illegal, order immediate release

Chandigarh, May 18, 2026: The Mohali Court has declared the arrest of Jaskaranjit Singh Deol, the in-charge of the Mullanpur Dakha constituency of Shiromani Akali Dal, as illegal and ordered his immediate release.
The court observed that informing an accused person about the grounds of arrest is a mandatory legal requirement and failure to do so amounts to a violation of constitutional rights.
According to information, defence counsel H.S. Dhanoa argued before the court that police from Mataur Police Station had taken Jaskaranjit Singh into custody from Ludhiana without informing him about the reasons and legal basis for his arrest.

During the hearing on the petition challenging the arrest, the court reportedly made strong remarks against the police action, stating that due legal procedure must be followed irrespective of the seriousness of the allegations.
The court further clarified that not informing the accused about the grounds of arrest violates constitutional safeguards guaranteed to every citizen.
