Fear-free nomination process gives AAP edge in Ferozepur MC polls
In 33 Wards, 409 nominations filed
Ferozepur, May 18, 2026: The upcoming Municipal Council elections in Ferozepur district are witnessing an intense political contest, with a total of 409 nomination papers filed for the civic bodies of Ferozepur, Zira, Talwandi Bhai and Nagar Panchayat Mudki scheduled for May 26, 2026.
As per first-hand information gathered from political circles, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress and BJP have reportedly fielded candidates in all 33 wards, indicating a direct and aggressive contest among the three parties. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and several rebel candidates are believed to have entered the fray in around 13 wards. However, the final political picture will become clear only after scrutiny and withdrawal of nomination papers.
Interestingly, the election atmosphere this time is being described as comparatively open and democratic barring one incident. During informal interactions among voters and candidates, it remained a major talking point that there were no allegations of pressure tactics, restrictions or coercion by any political party to stop candidates — including independents — from filing nominations.
Political observers believe that the absence of fear or political interference in the nomination process reflects positively on the ruling AAP government and may work in its favour electorally. The active participation of independent candidates and rebels has also added an unpredictable dimension to the contest in several wards.
According to official information, in all 409 nomination papers were filed, 192 for Municipal Council Ferozepur, 119 for Zira, 79 for Talwandi Bhai and 19 for Nagar Panchayat Mudki.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on May 18, while candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations till May 19. Voting will take place on May 26 and counting of votes will be held on May 29.
The District Election Officer informed that a total of 1,28,457 voters will exercise their franchise in these elections, including 61,091 male voters, 67,360 female voters and 6 voters under the “other” category.
Meanwhile, the District Election Officer appealed to voters to participate fearlessly and responsibly in the democratic process without any inducement, pressure or influence.
