Baba Bakala Sahib (Punjab), July 3, 2026: A 17-year-old youth from Punjab’s Budha Theh village near Beas died after allegedly drowning in a lake in Germany, leaving his family in grief. The family has appealed to the Central and Punjab governments to help repatriate his mortal remains.
According to family members, the deceased, Harshpreet Singh, had travelled to Germany about a year ago to visit his father, Kuldeep Singh Dhillon, who has been working there for the past seven years.
The incident reportedly occurred on June 30, when Harshpreet had gone to a lake with his friends. He is said to have drowned while bathing in the lake.
The family said his friends, along with rescue teams, carried out extensive efforts before his body was recovered from the water.
News of the teenager’s death has cast a pall of gloom over his native village. Harshpreet had recently passed Class 10 and was the only brother of his sister.
His mother and sister have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to facilitate the return of his body to Punjab so that the family can perform his last rites in their native village.
