Punjab Govt consulting AG, legal experts on Akal Takht's recommendations for sacrilege law: CM Mann

Chandigarh, July 21, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday said the state government is consulting the Advocate General (AG) and a team of legal experts on the recommendations made by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to strengthen the proposed anti-sacrilege law in Punjab.
Addressing a press conference after the Punjab Cabinet meeting, Mann said the government is carefully examining the suggestions received from Sri Akal Takht Sahib to ensure they are legally sound and consistent with constitutional and law-and-order requirements.
"The government holds Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, in the highest regard. Every suggestion and direction received from the institution is being given due consideration," the Chief Minister said.
He added that while framing a law on a highly sensitive issue such as sacrilege, it is essential to strike a balance between religious sentiments and constitutional provisions. The government, he said, wants to ensure that the legislation can withstand judicial scrutiny and effectively secure strict punishment for those found guilty of sacrilege.
Mann said detailed discussions are underway with the Advocate General and legal experts to suitably incorporate the recommendations of Sri Akal Takht Sahib into the proposed legislation in legally sustainable language.
He reiterated that the government's objective is to enact a robust law that deters future incidents of sacrilege while maintaining public order and complying with constitutional principles.
The Chief Minister also asserted that the government has no intention of going soft on those involved in sacrilege cases but wants to ensure that the law is drafted in a manner that cannot be easily challenged in courts.
