Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, brother of Dubai Ruler, dies at 76; 10-day mourning declared

Dubai (UAE), September 21, 2026: Dubai has announced 10 days of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He was 76.
The Dubai Media Office announced his death on Monday, following which the Ruler’s Court declared a 10-day mourning period across the emirate. Flags will be flown at half-mast during the mourning period.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid paid tribute to his brother in a post on X, saying he would remain in the family’s prayers and hearts.
Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also expressed condolences, remembering Sheikh Ahmed as a member of the family whose memory would remain in their hearts.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conveyed his condolences to Sheikh Mohammed and the Al Maktoum family. He also highlighted Sheikh Ahmed’s contribution to the UAE’s development since the country’s founding.
Sheikh Ahmed held several prominent roles in Dubai’s public, business and sporting sectors. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and was Chairman of ARM Holding, a private investment group with interests spanning real estate, hospitality, healthcare technology, telecommunications and banking.
He founded the Dubai Real Estate Centre in 1991, which later grew to oversee more than 3,200 residential, commercial and industrial properties.
Sheikh Ahmed was also closely associated with the development of sport in Dubai. He founded Al Wasl Sports Club in 1960 and served as its president for decades. Under his leadership, the club established itself as one of the most successful football clubs in the UAE.
In 1988, he established the Dubai International Marine Club and became its first president. He also played a role in the development of the Victory Team, the UAE’s offshore powerboat racing operation.
His involvement in equestrian sport included founding Jebel Ali Racecourse in the early 1990s and helping establish the Dubai Racing Club, contributing to the growth of horse racing in the UAE.
Sheikh Ahmed was also known for supporting charitable and community initiatives across the country.
