Chandigarh, September 22, 2026: What is the reality behind reports that Punjab Police personnel had been advised to avoid wearing uniforms while travelling to and from duty? The issue has triggered a political controversy after opposition leaders shared an alleged police advisory on social media along with a viral audio clip, purportedly featuring a woman police official referring to the same instructions.
The Punjab Police has now rejected the reports, describing the advisory being circulated on social media as false and clarifying that no such directions have been issued by the Punjab Police Headquarters or any other office under it.
The controversy surfaced after opposition leaders raised questions over the reported advisory, particularly in the backdrop of recent attacks on police personnel. The alleged advisory being circulated on social media reportedly asked police personnel to avoid wearing uniform while commuting to or from duty and to travel in civilian clothes.
A viral audio clip, purportedly of a woman police official discussing the advisory, also added to the controversy.
Punjab Police: No Such Advisory Issued
In a post on its official X account on September 22, Punjab Police termed the message a “FALSE ADVISORY” and stated that neither the Punjab Police Headquarters nor any other Punjab Police office under it had issued any advisory directing police personnel to:

The police department advised both citizens and police personnel to rely only on official channels for authentic information.
Opposition Raises Questions
The issue had gained attention after opposition leaders shared the alleged advisory and raised questions over the security situation of police personnel in Punjab.
The reported advisory came into focus following the killing of ASI Harjit Singh in Amritsar, after which concerns over the safety of police personnel were raised publicly. BJP leader Sunil Jakhar had also questioned the reported safety instructions, saying they raised questions about the law-and-order situation in the state.
Punjab Police's present position is clear: it says no such advisory was issued by its Headquarters or any office under it.
