Chandigarh, September 5, 2026: The Congress on Saturday announced a major reshuffle of its state organisational leadership, appointing Sachin Pilot as the new AICC General Secretary-In-charge of Punjab, replacing Bhupesh Baghel with immediate effect.
According to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) press release issued on September 5, Baghel has been reassigned as General Secretary-In-charge of Assam.
The changes come as the Congress looks to strengthen and streamline its organisational structure across several states.
Besides Punjab and Assam, the party has changed the leadership responsible for three other states. Randeep Singh Surjewala has been appointed General Secretary-In-charge of Gujarat and will also continue to hold additional responsibility for Karnataka.
Sukhdeo Bhagat has been appointed in-charge of Chhattisgarh, Dr. Sirivella Prasad as in-charge of Maharashtra, and P.V. Mohan as in-charge of Andhra Pradesh.
The party has also appreciated the contributions of outgoing General Secretaries/In-charges Jitendra Singh, Ramesh Chennithala and Manickam Tagore.
Meanwhile, Mukul Wasnik will continue as General Secretary, AICC.
Sachin Pilot’s Punjab Assignment
Pilot’s appointment assumes significance for Punjab, where the Congress is gearing up for the next Assembly elections and faces the challenge of strengthening its organisational structure and political outreach.
His immediate task will be to coordinate with the Punjab Congress leadership, legislators, senior leaders and grassroots workers while helping shape the party’s strategy for the state.
The reshuffle has come with immediate effect, according to the AICC announcement.
