Chandigarh, January 30, 2025:
Congress councillor Taruna Mehta has been elected as the deputy mayor of Chandigarh after securing 19 votes in the election held at the Municipal Corporation Office in Sector 17. Her victory gives the AAP-Congress alliance another key post in the municipal body.
The election was conducted through a secret ballot, following the closely watched contests for the mayor and senior deputy mayor positions. Earlier in the day, BJP’s Harpreet Kaur Babla was elected as the new mayor, while Congress’s Jasbir Singh Bunty won the senior deputy mayor post.
With the deputy mayor election concluded, the new municipal leadership is now set, marking a significant political shift in Chandigarh’s civic administration.
