Nawanshahr DC reviews flood preparedness along Sutlej river, orders timely completion of embankment works

Nawanshahr (Punjab), July 4, 2025:To strengthen flood protection measures ahead of the monsoon season, Deputy Commissioner Ankurjeet Singh on Friday conducted an extensive visit to multiple vulnerable points along the Sutlej River embankment. The visit focused on assessing ongoing stone pitching and desilting works aimed at preventing any flood-related emergencies.
Accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajeev Verma, SDM Balachaur Inderpal Singh, and other concerned officials, the Deputy Commissioner inspected the embankment at Rael Majra, where stone laying work worth ₹1 crore is underway.
He directed that the project be completed by July 15 without delay. The SDM has been instructed to monitor progress daily to ensure timely completion.
Strengthening Embankments to Prevent Floods
Officials briefed DC Singh that the stone pitching is being carried out at two key locations, and once completed, will fortify the riverbank and provide crucial protection to adjacent villages from potential flooding.
Streamlining Water Flow in Local Choes
The Deputy Commissioner also inspected nearby choes (seasonal rivulets):
- Rael Majra Choe: DC emphasized that water flow must not be obstructed under any circumstances.
- Kathgarh Choe: Ordered complete desilting within 10 days to ensure smooth water movement.
- Taunsa Choe: Inspected and gave instructions for maintenance and flood preparedness.
Upcoming Work at Auliapur
In village Auliapur, DC Singh reviewed the proposed stone studding project for additional riverbank protection. Officials informed him that the tender process (₹70 lakh) is nearing completion, and the work will commence immediately thereafter.
Community Involvement
Local villagers, along with department officers, participated during the inspections. The Deputy Commissioner urged all departments to maintain coordination and work proactively to safeguard lives and property during the monsoon.
