New Delhi, July 9, 2025: In a significant development over the long-standing Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, a key meeting was held today in New Delhi between the states of Punjab and Haryana, chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. This was the first formal meeting under his leadership to address the inter-state water sharing concerns.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the discussion as “positive and constructive.” He reiterated Punjab’s position, stating, “Haryana is our brother. If Punjab receives water from the Chenab and Ravi rivers, then there would be no problem in water sharing.”
Echoing the spirit of cooperation, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini also noted that the meeting was held in a cordial and meaningful environment.
He emphasized that both Punjab and Haryana share a brotherly relationship and that efforts are being made sincerely to find a mutually acceptable solution.

Mann Says – Punjab Should Get Water from Chenab and Ravi
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that there is a ray of hope following a meeting regarding the upper river waters excluded under the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan.
He emphasized that this water should be brought to Punjab. While Punjab cannot receive water from the Jhelum River, it can receive water from the Chenab and Ravi rivers, which can flow through the Pong, Ranjit Sagar, and Bhakra dams.
“What problem do we have in diverting that water further?” he asked.
“Haryana is our brother. We are the descendants of Bhai Kanhaiya, who served water even to enemies.”
Mann said he told the Union Minister that 23 MAF (Million Acre-Feet) of water flows from there, while we are fighting over 2-3 MAFs. “Then what issue can there be for us?” he asked rhetorically.
He further stated that 2-4 new canals would be constructed in Punjab, and from now on, Punjab would regain its riparian rights as before.
The Union Minister, he said, gave a positive response. However, Mann made it clear that Punjab’s stance on the SYL (Satluj-Yamuna Link) canal issue remains unchanged.
