Tarn Taran By-Election – Know the candidates of different parties

Tarn Taran (Punjab), October 4, 2025:The Tarn Taran assembly seat fell vacant after the demise of MLA Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal, leading to the upcoming by-election. While the official election notification is yet to be issued, major political parties in Punjab have already announced their candidates, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest.
So far, the four leading parties have declared the following names:
- Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): Harmeet Singh Sandhu
- Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD): Bibi Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa
- Congress: Karanbir Singh Burj
- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): Harjeet Singh Sandhu
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann made a major announcement in Tarn Taran, declaring that Harmeet Singh Sandhu will be AAP’s candidate. Notably, Sandhu joined AAP in July this year after leaving Shiromani Akali Dal.
Harmeet Singh Sandhu’s political journey is significant:
- Elected as an independent candidate from Tarn Taran in 2002
- Won again in 2007 and 2012 on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket
- Faced defeat in 2017
- Contested in 2022 on an Akali Dal ticket but lost, finishing in second place
With SAD fielding Bibi Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, Congress announcing Karanbir Singh Burj, and BJP backing Harjeet Singh Sandhu, the Tarn Taran by-election is shaping up to be a closely watched political battle.
