Chandigarh, October 4, 2025: Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has strongly objected to the practice of deploying teachers for clerical and administrative duties in certain districts, calling it "unacceptable" and a violation of their primary role as educators.
Bains emphasized that teachers are not ordinary government employees but “torchbearers of knowledge, entrusted with the sacred duty of shaping Punjab’s future.” He cited Section 27 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which explicitly prohibits engaging teachers in non-educational work, except for Census, Disaster Relief, and Election duties.
“I have written to the Chief Secretary, Punjab, directing that no teacher should be assigned non-teaching duties. In unavoidable circumstances, prior written approval from the Education Department is mandatory,” Bains stated.
Reiterating his stance, the minister stressed that teachers must remain in classrooms, dedicating their time to nurturing and educating children, rather than being diverted to routine clerical tasks. “Their presence in classrooms is non-negotiable,” he added.
