Chandigarh, July 9, 2025: In a significant development on the long-standing Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, a high-level meeting chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil was held in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The meeting, attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, was marked by a cordial and constructive atmosphere, rekindling hope for a resolution to the decades-old water-sharing dispute.
The discussion saw participation from key officials, including Union Secretary Debashree Mukherjee, Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, Additional Chief Secretary of Irrigation and Water Resources Anurag Aggarwal, and senior irrigation department officers from both states. The next round of talks has been scheduled for August 5.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini expressed optimism, stating, “The talks were meaningful and held in a positive environment. Even Punjab’s Chief Minister acknowledged that the SYL issue needs a resolution, as it has remained unresolved for far too long.”
Saini emphasized the brotherly relationship between Punjab and Haryana, adding that mutual respect and understanding continue to bind the two states. He also conveyed confidence that the next meeting would pave the way for a breakthrough.
The renewed dialogue has sparked cautious optimism in both states, as the central government facilitates an outcome to one of India’s most sensitive inter-state water disputes.
