Strong opposition to Centre’s policies by SKM; burn Electricity Amendment and Seed Bills
Ferozepur, December 8, 2025: Responding to a call by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), various organisations of farmers, labourers, students and power employees held a massive protest today at the Ferozepur Cantt Power Grid. The protesters raised slogans against the Central Government, demanding the rollback of the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 and the Seed Bill.
Addressing the media, farmer leader Avtar Singh Mehama accused the Central Government of undermining the rights of the states by attempting to take control of state electricity bodies and pushing forward what he described as a “fascist policy.” He alleged that the Centre was rapidly moving to hand over the entire power sector to corporate houses for profit.
He further said that through the Seed Bill, the government was once again interfering in the agriculture sector. He emphasised that research and preservation of seeds is the right of common people and state governments, but the Centre wants to transfer this authority to big corporate companies. “People of Punjab will never accept the Electricity Amendment Bill or the Seed Bill at any cost,” he added.
At the end of the protest, demonstrators burnt copies of both the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 and the Seed Bill.
Leaders who addressed the gathering included Gurmeet Singh Mehama and Dalwinder Singh Sherkhan (Krantikari Kisan Union), Gurditt Singh (All India Kisan Sabha), Parmjit Singh Bhullar (Kisan Union Khosa), Gurmell Singh (Kisan Union Kadia), Rakesh Saini and Ashwani Sharma (Employees Federation), Gurdev Singh and Kulwant Singh (TSU), Rakesh Sharma and Surinder Sharma (Pensioners Association), Jagrup Singh Bhullar (Kisan Students Union), Vishal Teji (CHB workers), and Jaswant Singh Patti (Punjab Janmhoori Morcha).
