Chandigarh, February 27, 2026: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Chandigarh Unit) on Thursday submitted a wide-ranging charter of demands to the city’s Administrator and Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, calling for urgent administrative and civic reforms.
The delegation, led by Chandigarh Unit President S. Charanjit Singh Villy, included senior party members S. Balwinder Singh, S. Zabarjang Singh, S. Mandeep Singh, Shri Rajeev Tuli and S. Nirbhai Singh.
During the meeting, the Akali leaders pressed for immediate implementation of the Anti-Defection Law in the Municipal Corporation and sought extension of the Mayor’s tenure along with enhanced executive powers.
They also demanded permission for floor-wise property registry, relief for Housing Board residents facing construction-related hurdles, and ownership transfer rights for GPA (General Power of Attorney) properties.
Raising administrative concerns, the delegation called for restoration of the Punjab–UT cadre ratio (60:40) and urged a shift in the official language from English to Punjabi.
Civic development issues were also highlighted, including infrastructure upgrades in villages and colonies under Chandigarh, modernization of sector dispensaries and government hospitals, and protection of existing religious sites.
On urban mobility, the party sought improved management of the Smart Parking System, adoption of advanced traffic technologies, and stressed the urgent need for a Metro or Mono Rail project to address growing congestion. A fresh assessment of commercial property rates was also demanded.
S. Charanjit Singh Villy stated that Governor Kataria heard the delegation patiently and assured that the concerns raised would be examined and addressed appropriately.
The Chandigarh unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal expressed appreciation for the Administrator’s time and described the meeting as a constructive step toward resolving long-pending public issues.
