Gurdaspur (Punjab), February 27, 2026: he family of 19-year-old Ranjit Singh, who was killed in an alleged police encounter earlier this week, has refused to perform his last rites, demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Ranjit Singh was shot dead on Wednesday during a Punjab Police operation. He had been accused in the killing of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Ashok Kumar. Police had described the incident as an encounter linked to the double murder of the two personnel.
However, the family has raised serious allegations, questioning the official version of events. Insisting that the “truth must come out,” they have declined to cremate the body until an independent investigation is ordered.
The issue has triggered political reactions across party lines. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa urged that a CBI probe be ordered to ensure transparency and justice. He stated that the matter requires an impartial investigation, especially in light of the allegations being made.
Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar also called for an independent and time-bound inquiry, saying the case should be treated as a test of accountability.
