Chandigarh, March 10, 2026:A major political controversy erupted during the ongoing budget session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly on Tuesday after a remark by Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira about women triggered sharp protests from the ruling party. The statement has now sparked allegations of insulting women and may soon reach the Punjab State Women Commission for further action.
The issue was raised in the Assembly after Khaira, during an interview with a private channel, commented on the state government’s ₹1,000 monthly financial assistance scheme for women. While criticizing the scheme, he reportedly said, “Where will brave warriors be born from women who perform giddha for ₹1,000?”
The remark drew strong condemnation from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which accused Khaira of insulting the dignity of women in Punjab. Leaders from the treasury benches argued that the comment demeaned the capability and respect of Punjab’s women.
As soon as the House proceedings began, AAP MLAs — particularly women legislators — strongly protested against Khaira’s remark. They demanded an apology from the Congress leader and called for action against him, including his suspension from the House.
The protests created a ruckus in the Assembly, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings multiple times amid the continuing uproar.
According to reports, the controversy is likely to be taken up by the Punjab State Women Commission. The Commission may take suo motu notice of the statement or act on a formal complaint filed by the government or other stakeholders.
