Chandigarh, March 10, 2026:The controversy surrounding remarks by Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira about women has intensified, with the Punjab Legislative Assembly passing a censure motion against him and the Punjab State Women Commission taking suo motu notice of the matter.
The Commission has initiated action over Khaira’s alleged comments regarding women, particularly Dalit women, and has sought a report from the police. The development comes shortly after the Assembly witnessed heated exchanges over the issue.
Women’s Commission Orders Probe
Taking serious note of Khaira’s social media post, the Punjab State Women Commission issued directions to the Kapurthala police to investigate the matter. The Commission has instructed the Punjab Police that an officer of the rank of SP should conduct the probe.
The Commission has also directed the SSP of Kapurthala to ensure that a status report of the investigation is submitted promptly to both the Commission and the court.
Censure Motion in Assembly
Earlier in the day, MLAs of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party moved a censure motion against Khaira in the Assembly. The party accused the Congress leader of deliberately insulting Dalit women through his remarks.
AAP legislators also alleged that Khaira’s comments were made at the behest of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Several women MLAs demanded strict action against Khaira, with some even calling for the cancellation of his Assembly membership.
The Women’s Commission has stated that the remarks appear derogatory and capable of hurting the dignity of women in society. While the opposition has termed the action politically motivated, the Commission’s intervention has added a legal dimension to the controversy, potentially increasing the challenges for Khaira.
