Himachal CM Sukhu inaugurates multipurpose sports stadium in Sanjauli, announces Rs 1 crore for ground development

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), June 8, 2026: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday inaugurated a new multipurpose sports stadium at Sanjauli in Shimla, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.18 crore.
The stadium features an open playing field, an open hall, kitchen facilities and other infrastructure required for hosting sports competitions and community events.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister also flagged off Himachal Pradesh's first "Chitta Awareness Volleyball Tournament", organised as part of the International Summer Festival, Shimla. He unveiled the tournament trophy and announced a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for the winning team.
Addressing the gathering, Sukhu took the salute during a march-past by 13 participating teams from across the state and administered an anti-drug pledge to the players. He also announced Rs 1 crore for the development and upgradation of the historic Sanjauli ground, establishment of a Primary Health Centre in the area and the grant of district-level fair status to the Sanjauli Holi Fair.
The Chief Minister said the state government is making efforts to host Khelo India events in Himachal Pradesh and has already issued necessary directions to the concerned departments. He added that the government has enhanced prize money for athletes winning international competitions and will soon introduce a new policy to encourage medal winners at national-level events.
Sukhu further said that a new stadium is being constructed at Ghatasani near Shimla at a cost of Rs 10 crore to strengthen sports infrastructure in the region.
Recalling his school days, the Chief Minister said he had actively participated in sports and understands the challenges faced by athletes. He highlighted that the government has increased diet allowances for sportspersons, providing Rs 400 per day for competitions within the state and Rs 500 per day for events outside Himachal Pradesh. Athletes travelling more than 200 kilometres are also being provided air travel facilities.
Shimla MLA Harish Janartha said the development of the Sanjauli ground fulfilled a long-pending demand of local residents and reflected the government's commitment to promoting sports and steering youth away from drug abuse.
Among those present were Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh, Director of Youth Services and Sports Shivam Pratap Singh, and other dignitaries.
