Chandigarh, June 13, 2026: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parambans Singh Romana on Saturday said he voluntarily withdrew his application to enter Canada after immigration authorities asked him to provide an undertaking that he would not engage in political activities during his visit.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Romana alleged that a "manufactured complaint" had been submitted to Canadian authorities from Manila to block his entry, despite the fact that he had obtained the necessary court permission for the visit.
He claimed the complaint contained detailed information about political cases registered against him and attempted to portray him as a threat to public safety. Romana said he had informed immigration officials that his visit was intended to meet his daughter, attend a family wedding and interact with the NRI community ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
According to Romana, he chose to return to India after being told he would need to sign an undertaking refraining from political activities. He also presented documents to the media which, he said, showed that he had left Canada voluntarily.
The SAD leader further alleged that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party was unsettled by the support the party was receiving from the NRI community in Canada and accused it of attempting to disrupt the SAD delegation's visit.
Romana also condemned what he described as a smear campaign against him, alleging that AAP's propaganda machinery spread rumours that he had arrived in Vancouver in an intoxicated state. He said he would file a defamation suit against a television channel that carried the claim and lodge police complaints against social media pages that circulated the allegation.
