Chandigarh, June 24, 2026: Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu appeared before Punjab State Scheduled Castes (SC) Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi on Wednesday and expressed regret over his recent caste-related remarks, apologising to the Scheduled Castes community.
During the proceedings, Bittu reportedly folded his hands and conveyed his apology, following which the Commission took note of his expression of remorse.
As part of its directions, Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi asked Bittu to pay obeisance at four prominent religious places — Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath, Sachkhand Ballan, Dera Phillaur and Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib. He was also directed to offer prayers at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar and participate in the community langar as a gesture of equality and social harmony.
Addressing the matter, Garhi said the Constitution of India prohibits discrimination and untouchability on the basis of caste, religion, race or gender. Referring to the teachings of Sikh Gurus, he said that all human beings deserve equal respect and dignity, regardless of their social background.
"Our Constitution and the teachings of the Gurus reject casteism and discrimination. Everyone should be treated with equal respect," Garhi said.
The Commission chairman also cited the message of equality enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and highlighted the contributions of revered saints and bhagats from diverse social backgrounds.
Ravneet Singh Bittu accepted the Commission's directions and agreed to comply with them. The development has attracted significant attention in Punjab's political and social circles.
