Nawanshahr (Punjab), June 30,2026: The month-long mega campaign, “Khet Bachao Abhiyan,” organized by the Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (PAU-KVK), Langroya, officially culminated today, marking a massive milestone in the district's shift toward sustainable agriculture.
Running from June 1st to 30th June , 2026, under the watchful eyes of PAU, Ludhiana, and ICAR-ATARI, the campaign successfully executed an intensive roadmap to reverse soil chemical fatigue and establish eco-friendly farming systems.
Inaugurating the concluding sessions, Dr. Pardeep Kumar, Associate Director (Training), reiterated that safeguarding soil fertility is directly tied to the economic survival of Punjab's peasantry. "Our focus this entire month has been to revive fields from chemical exhaustion by putting practical, cost-effective solutions directly into farmers' hands," he stated.
Special Chief Guest Dr. Lekh Raj, Chief Agriculture Officer of SBS Nagar, delivered a detailed lecture on restorative soil health, cautioning against the long-term degradation caused by excessive chemical use.
Supporting this, Vijay Maheshi, ADO (Enforcement), educated participants on the precise, balanced application of fertilizers and highlighted specific government welfare schemes designed to ease the transition away from high-chemical dependencies.
A major highlight of the campaign's specialized capacity-building focus was the participation of Chief Guest Ms. Simran Sethi, District Development Manager (DDM), NABARD. She detailed dedicated credit schemes and special grant structures designed to help Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) kickstart micro-enterprises. She motivated the enterprising village women to adopt NABARD schemes like Rural Mart for their transformation from “ Village biba’s into Business Divas”.
The concluding session saw active participation and experience-sharing from key grassroots leaders who are driving the sustainable farming movement in the region: Mrs. Palwinder Kaur, President of Jot Self-Help Group, and representative of the Suman PSRLM (Kishanpura) group, shared how rural women are organizing to adopt sustainable practices and leverage NABARD schemes for micro-enterprises. Sh. Prabhjot Singh Balachaur spoke on behalf of the regional Farmer Producer Organizations, highlighting how collective bargaining and shared processing help reduce input costs for farmers transitioning away from chemical dependencies. Sh. Surjit Singh Langeri, a leading practitioner of natural farming, shared his field experiences and practical insights on successfully maintaining high crop yields using eco-friendly bio-inputs instead of synthetic fertilizers. The technical sessions bridged technical farming solutions with community health: Dr. Jaswinder Kumar, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), demonstrated methods to build soil organic matter.
He shared that KVK Langroya has committed a substantial portion of its institutional farm to mass-producing elite green manure seeds like Sunnhemp, training farmers to cultivate their own seed stocks to minimize external input costs. Dr. Rajinder Kaur, Assistant Professor (Home Science), bridged the gap between agriculture and public health. She explained how systemic chemical bioaccumulation through the food chain triggers severe chronic illnesses, making a strong case for the younger generation of farmers to champion organic cultivation, balanced nutrition, and safe food consumption.
To achieve maximum penetration at the village level, the campaign operated under a rigorous, high-density field schedule throughout June. Beyond direct field visits, the KVK team successfully organized 6 specialized capacity-building programmes targeting vital rural networks, including:
• Local agricultural input dealers and representatives of cooperative societies.
• A dedicated Sarpanch Sammelan, which brought together current and former Sarpanchs, Panchs, Zila Parishad members, and grassroots community leaders.
• Progressive farm innovators, Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs), SHGs, and FPOs.
The successful climax of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan underscores KVK Langroya’s relentless dedication to transforming traditional, high-chemical farming into a resilient, ecologically balanced model. By physically reaching over 6,500 stakeholders in a single month, the campaign did not merely spread awareness—it created an active, village-level support structure.
