VC Prof Sharma highlights role of AI & ML in medical sciences; 120 attend global webinar
Ferozepur, June 29, 2026: On the occasion of National Statistics Day, celebrated on June 29, Prof. (Dr.) Suresh Kumar Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, delivered an insightful online keynote lecture at an international webinar organised by the Department of Statistics, Bharathiar University. The international webinar was formally inaugurated by Dr. R. Rajavel, Registrar of Bharathiar University, along with Organising Secretary Dr. S. Gandhiyavendhan.
The lecture, titled “Contributions of P.C. Mahalanobis & AI and ML Techniques in Medical and Biological Sciences,” was the main highlight of the International Webinar on Data Fusion Using Statistical Techniques (IWDFST 2026).
Prof. Sharma, a renowned biostatistician and expert in Statistics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML), shared valuable perspectives on the evolving role of data-driven technologies in healthcare and biological research. During his address, he paid rich tributes to legendary Indian statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis for his pioneering contributions towards establishing modern statistical practices in India.
He also elaborated on how statistical techniques, combined with advanced AI and ML tools, are opening new possibilities in medical research, disease prediction, biological data analysis, and solving complex scientific challenges.
The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 120 participants from India and abroad, including data scientists, researchers, and academicians, who actively engaged in discussions on the future applications of statistics and emerging technologies.
