Breaking: 2007 Sacrilege accused murdered in Fatehgarh Sahib

Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab), July 14, 2026: A man accused in a 2007 sacrilege case was allegedly hacked to death with sharp-edged weapons by unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district late Monday night, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Mewa Singh, a resident of Turan village. According to preliminary information, a group of unidentified attackers carried out the brutal assault before fleeing the spot.
Police said Mewa Singh had been named in a 2007 sacrilege case related to a village gurdwara and had served a jail term in connection with the incident. However, officials said no other criminal case had been registered against him since then, and he had been leading a normal life.
Senior police officials rushed to the scene after receiving information about the murder. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bikramjit Singh Ghuman said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, while police teams have begun scanning CCTV footage from the area and questioning suspects.
Based on statements recorded from the victim’s family members, police have registered a murder case against unidentified persons and launched an investigation.
DSP Ghuman said the motive behind the killing is yet to be established and that investigators are examining all possible angles. He added that the exact circumstances surrounding the murder would become clearer after the post-mortem report and further investigation.
Police expressed confidence that the accused would be identified and arrested soon.
