Jalandhar (Punjab), July 17, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a blistering attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government, alleging that law and order in the state had "completely collapsed" and asserting that only a BJP-led double-engine government could steer Punjab towards development and security.
Addressing a public rally in Jalandhar, Modi accused the AAP government of corruption, misgovernance and failing to maintain public safety in the border state.
"There is a 'kattar beimaan' (thoroughly dishonest) party in power in Punjab. Its ministers and MLAs are repeatedly being caught accepting bribes," the Prime Minister alleged.
Referring to recent legal proceedings involving AAP leaders, Modi claimed that several senior functionaries of the party were facing serious criminal charges. He also cited a recent court verdict involving an AAP leader in Delhi, alleging that the party had defended a leader who was later convicted in a case related to the killing of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer.
Expressing concern over Punjab's security situation, the Prime Minister alleged that gang wars and murders had become commonplace in the state, while extortion and crime had created fear among citizens.
"Punjab is a border state, yet law and order has completely failed. Gang wars are taking place openly, murders are happening in broad daylight, and people no longer feel safe," Modi said.
He also alleged that the drug menace had worsened under the present government and claimed that the administration had failed to curb narcotics trafficking, putting the future of Punjab's youth at risk.
Pitching the BJP as an alternative, Modi urged voters to support the party in the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, saying a "double-engine government" at the Centre and the state would ensure better governance, stronger security and faster development.
The Prime Minister further accused the AAP government of hypocrisy, alleging that while its leaders were facing corruption allegations, the party was advising people not to pay bribes instead of addressing corruption within its own ranks.
Modi also targeted the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), alleging that both parties had failed to safeguard Punjab's interests. He claimed that while Congress was preoccupied with internal infighting, the Akali Dal had lost focus on the state's future.
The remarks were made during Modi's visit to Jalandhar, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹5,470 crore.
