Punjab dedicates Rs 26-crore Irrigation projects to expand Canal Water Supply in Sri Chamkaur Sahib

Sri Chamkaur Sahib (Punjab), July 28, 2026: Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal on Tuesday dedicated a series of irrigation projects worth ₹26.12 crore in the Sri Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency, aimed at expanding canal irrigation, reducing dependence on groundwater and providing relief to farmers.
The projects include the lining of the Samrala Major, restoration of the Amarala Minor, underground pipeline networks, and lift irrigation schemes, which together are expected to bring canal water to thousands of acres of farmland across the constituency.
Addressing the gathering at Village Rurki Heeran, Goyal said the Bhagwant Mann-led government is prioritising the revival of Punjab’s canal network to maximise irrigation coverage while conserving rapidly depleting groundwater resources.
The Minister said ₹11.74 crore has been spent on lining the 7.21-km Samrala Major, increasing the canal-irrigated area from 2,516 acres to 3,333 acres and benefiting 13 villages.
He further said the 3.35-km Amarala Minor has been restored at a cost of ₹2.01 crore, expanding irrigation coverage from 1,519 acres to 2,223 acres across four villages.
To improve water delivery, the government has also laid 10.76 km of underground pipelines at a cost of ₹8.95 crore. The project will benefit nine villages and increase the irrigated area from 1,698 acres to 2,295 acres.
In addition, lift irrigation schemes have been established in Jhallian, Kheri Salabatpur, Dhaularan and Bhojemajra at a cost of ₹3.42 crore, providing canal irrigation to 965 acres of agricultural land.
The Minister also announced the construction of 40 temporary water outlets (Moghas) benefiting farmers in 17 villages across the constituency.
According to Goyal, the total canal-irrigated area in these villages has increased from 3,217 acres in 2022 to 4,518 acres, bringing an additional 1,301 acres under canal irrigation.
He added that lift irrigation projects worth nearly ₹44 crore had already been completed earlier in the constituency, extending canal water to 21 villages, and the newly inaugurated projects will further strengthen irrigation infrastructure.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri Chamkaur Sahib MLA Dr. Charanjit Singh said the projects would significantly reduce irrigation costs, improve agricultural productivity and help conserve groundwater. He termed the initiatives a long-awaited boost for farmers in the constituency and thanked the state government for undertaking the projects.
