New Delhi, July 28, 2026: Former Punjab Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi was conspicuous by his absence as a delegation of Punjab Congress MPs met the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) on Tuesday to seek a probe into the alleged police action against Dalit sanitation workers in Barnala.
The delegation, led by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, included MPs Dr Amar Singh, Dr Dharamvir Gandhi, and Gurjeet Singh Aujla, who submitted a memorandum to NCSC Chairman Kishor Makwana demanding an independent inquiry into the alleged baton charge on Scheduled Caste sanitation workers.
Channi, who represents Jalandhar in the Lok Sabha and is one of the Congress’ prominent Scheduled Caste leaders from Punjab, did not join the delegation.
The Congress MPs alleged that sanitation workers protesting over their demands were subjected to excessive police force and urged the Commission to seek a report from the Punjab Government, order an impartial inquiry and ensure accountability.
