Captain Amarinder Singh Asks PM Modi to Clarify Meaning of ‘Dimagi Naxals’ Term- HT Report

Chandigarh, 4 September 2026- BJP leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clarify what the term ‘Dimagi Naxal’ means and what distinguishes people placed in this category from those exercising legitimate democratic dissent.
Captain Amarinder Singh made the remarks while commenting on Prime Minister Modi’s Independence Day address from the Red Fort. His comments come ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, at a time when the BJP is seeking to expand its political base in the state.
In an article published in HT, the former Chief Minister cautioned against using the Naxal label too casually.
“Let us not be too careless with the Naxal label,” Captain Amarinder Singh said, stressing that India should not have to choose between national security and democratic freedoms.
According to him, when properly understood, national security and democratic liberty are not competing values but can strengthen each other.
In his article, Captain Amarinder Singh also pointed out that Prime Minister Modi had not described the recent youth protests as ‘Urban Naxalism’, and therefore it would be incorrect to directly associate the protests with such a characterization.
However, he cautioned that political terminology rarely remains confined to its original context.
The former Punjab Chief Minister’s comments underline the need for greater clarity over the use of terms associated with national security, particularly when they are applied in the context of political protests and dissent.
He argued that while the country must remain vigilant against threats to national security, democratic disagreement and peaceful dissent should not automatically be viewed through the same lens.
Captain Amarinder Singh’s remarks are significant in the backdrop of the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its presence in Punjab, where political contestation is expected to intensify ahead of the Assembly elections.
