Chandigarh, September 30, 2026: Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the drug issue in Punjab, accusing them of attempting to take political mileage from the state’s drug crisis.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Arora alleged that the spread of synthetic drugs, including ‘chitta’, began during the SAD-BJP government’s tenure in Punjab and accused the BJP of now engaging in political “drama” over the issue.
He further alleged that a significant portion of the drug supply entering Punjab was coming from states governed by the BJP. Arora said tackling drugs was a collective responsibility and that the Centre and BJP leadership should also be accountable for their role in addressing the problem.
Referring to the 2007-2017 period, when SAD and BJP were coalition partners in Punjab, Arora claimed that this was when people in the state first began hearing widely about ‘chitta’ and synthetic drugs.
He questioned why the BJP’s central leadership did not act against the drug menace during that period and asked why alleged major drug traffickers were not brought to justice.
Arora reiterated the Punjab government’s commitment to action against drug trafficking, saying the police and Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been given clear and impartial directions.
He said anyone found to have facilitated or supported the drug trade in Punjab would face action, irrespective of their position or influence. He added that the investigation would be taken to its logical conclusion and those found responsible would be prosecuted.
Responding to questions about allegations raised by opposition parties and security concerns, Arora said that anyone facing a threat to their life or possessing important information could come forward publicly and make their statement. He said the Punjab government was committed to providing security where required.
His remarks came as the BJP’s statewide ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, launched on September 18, is concluding in Jalandhar on Wednesday with a rally addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The BJP campaign has covered all 117 Assembly constituencies and nearly 4,000 km across the state.
Arora’s comments are part of the ongoing political exchange between the AAP and BJP over Punjab’s drug crisis, which has emerged as a major issue in the run-up to the 2027 Assembly elections.
