Amritsar (Punjab), October 2, 2026: An eight-year-old girl and her mother were allegedly attacked by a young woman living in their neighbourhood in Dashmesh Nagar near Joda Phatak in Amritsar. The incident was reportedly captured on a CCTV camera installed in the locality.
According to the girl's family, the incident occurred when the mother, Priyanka, had gone out with her children to buy items from a nearby shop. While returning, a neighbour, identified by the family as Anmol, allegedly asked Priyanka to stop near her house.
The family alleged that Priyanka raised an alarm and ran to seek help from her relatives. At that point, Anmol allegedly attacked her eight-year-old daughter Manya from behind.
When Priyanka returned to protect her daughter, the alleged attacker reportedly assaulted her as well, causing her to fall to the ground.
The family further alleged that the child was beaten and dragged towards the house. They also alleged that the attacker attempted to choke the girl and struck her on the face and back. According to the family, the girl was also allegedly threatened with being killed with a brick.
Hearing the screams, neighbours and relatives reportedly reached the spot and intervened, after which the child and her mother were rescued. The family said both sustained injuries in the incident.
Manya's father, Pankaj, said his daughter is a Class 1 student and has been undergoing treatment for a neurological condition for several years. He said the family has been living in the area since 1978 and had not previously faced any dispute with their neighbours.
The family has also alleged that relatives of the woman accused of the assault have been defending her by claiming that she has a mental health condition and possesses documents from a mental hospital. The family has questioned whether appropriate measures were being taken to prevent any risk to others if she was indeed suffering from a mental health condition.
The family has sought protection and strict action in the matter.
A police official said Pankaj had submitted a complaint and an investigation had been initiated. Police have taken the CCTV footage into consideration as part of the investigation and will examine the relevant medical documents and records if the accused woman's claimed medical condition is established.
Police said further action would be taken based on the facts established during the investigation and in accordance with the law.
