New Delhi, October 10, 2026: Delhi Police detained protesters gathered near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib on Saturday as demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar continued in the national capital.
According to a report by ThePrint, police personnel arrived in large numbers near the gurdwara around 1 pm and dragged away demonstrators raising slogans against Kumar at the entrance.
Several protesters had reportedly taken shelter overnight at the Sikh shrine after authorities announced restrictions across Delhi on October 9. They had planned to join the demonstrations the following morning but found barricades blocking access to Jantar Mantar, prompting some to return to the gurdwara.
A 24-year-old protester, who spoke to ThePrint on condition of anonymity, said she and others had been at the gurdwara since 9 am. The group intermittently raised slogans and dispersed when police approached, later gathering again.
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib has previously served as a refuge for demonstrators during protests, including the anti-CAA-NRC movement, the farmers’ agitation and earlier demonstrations by members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
The latest detentions came amid protests seeking Kumar’s resignation and allegations concerning the conduct of elections. The protesters’ demands and the police action have intensified the confrontation surrounding the demonstrations.
