Unseasonal rain disrupts harvest in Punjab, farmers fear crop damage and losses

Chandigarh, October 11, 2026: Unseasonal rain in several parts of Punjab on Sunday has heightened farmers’ concerns over possible damage to standing crops and harvested produce lying in grain markets, particularly as the paddy procurement season is underway.
The sudden change in weather has disrupted farmers’ plans, with harvesting in progress in some fields and harvested crops awaiting procurement or further handling in mandis. Farmers fear that continued rainfall could affect grain quality, delay harvesting and lead to financial losses.
Farmers said crops exposed to rain could become wet, potentially affecting their quality and creating difficulties during procurement. Protecting produce stored in open market areas has also emerged as a concern, particularly where adequate covering and drainage arrangements are lacking.
The rainfall has added to the challenges faced by farmers, who are already dealing with rising input costs, uncertain weather conditions and concerns over getting remunerative prices for their produce.
Farmers have called for an assessment of any crop damage caused by the rainfall and sought appropriate compensation for those who suffer losses.
However, the actual extent of damage to standing crops and produce in mandis will become clear only after field inspections and an assessment of affected areas. Farmers are now hoping for clear weather to resume harvesting and protect their produce from further damage.
